It's Truth Or Dare In America
Remember when the news media in America was called The Fourth Estate? Its role was to keep government honest by exposing corruption at all levels and questioning the 'official narrative' if it smelled at all fishy. That was then. This is now. Now, our mainstream media is literally in collusion with the two corrupt parties. Forget exposing anything at this point. In some cases, it's about not covering the story at all, even if it impacts the American people.
The Watergate scandal broke in the Washington Post due to the dogged investigative reporting of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, and the support they received from Ben Bradlee and Katherine Graham. It broke because Katherine Graham knew she had a story, and she knew it should be told. She also had a newspaper with a reputation to uphold, and she did. Do you think this story would break in the Washington Post under the ownership of the Online Antichrist, Jeff Bezos? I doubt that the story would get anything but the bare minimum of coverage, and not much follow up today. Moreover, there are no Woodwards and Bernsteins out there in the mainstream. They are all sanitized, scripted talking heads who would not know what journalism looked like if it was labeled and left on their desks. Even Woodward and Bernstein themselves have now been assimilated into the mainstream and taught that real power in a corporate-owned media world comes with parroting the official story.
We can thank Ronald Reagan for getting the ball rolling on destroying the objectivity of the media, but we can thank Bill Clinton alone, a Democrat, for signing the Telecommunications Act of 1996. This single event made men like Rupert Murdoch possible. It corporatized the media, removing its objectivity and jeopardizing democracy. Today, just six corporations and fifteen billionaires own more than 90% of our media.
Forget the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, NBC and the rest of the most "trusted" names in news. They are no more. There are no Edward R. Murrows in the mainstream. There are Jake Tappers, Wolf Blitzers (I like to call him Wolf Blitz-krieg), and talking heads like Rachel Maddow. Yes, these are names from what we called the "liberal" media. The reality is that the liberal media is owned by the Democratic Party and, therefore, they do not cover the corruption in the Democratic party. In fact, they simply cover for it. On the right, you have Fox, and a host of crazy ass right-wing outlets. They present their own problems, but they are actually worth looking at. They are usually repeating stories that have appeared elsewhere.
This is the way we get our news these days, unless you are like the rest of we truthers. We dig deep, and we never rely on the mainstream media for anything, unless we see it elsewhere. The tables have turned.
What this section amounts to is a working document of the news outlets we rely on, some more than others, and some we take information from with a grain of salt. That is what is required today. It is also required that we rely on "citizen journalists" because we know for certain that we there are stories that will be buried.
Where to Get Your News
This is a "living document" that will be continually updated as the landscape changes, and it is ever-changing. The old liberal outlets we once relied on, like Salon, Alternet, and Democracy Now with Amy Goodman should be looked at with great suspicion. We will not focus on just "publications," but also news outlets and informational web sites. You will see that some new sites do double duty.
National Security Archive
Combats rising government secrecy
Founded in 1985 by journalists and scholars to check rising government secrecy, the National Security Archive combines a unique range of functions: investigative journalism center, research institute, library and archive of declassified U.S. documents ("the world's largest nongovernmental collection" according to the Los Angeles Times), leading non-profit user of the U.S. Freedom of Information Act, among other things.
WikiLeaks is an international non-profit organisation that publishes secret information, news leaks, and classified media provided by anonymous sources. Its website, initiated in 2006 in Iceland by the organisation Sunshine Press, claims a database of 10 million documents in 10 years since its launch.

The Black Vault
Two million documents available
It is hard to explain Disobedient Media except to say that it's disobedient. Under the "About Us" section of their web site there is a subhead that reads OUR BELIEF. There is absolutely nothing there, and there is no link either. And I am sure that is done purposely. Personally, I like it and I recommend it heartily. It boasts Elizabeth Voss as well.
You’ve stumbled upon the largest privately run online repository of declassified government documents anywhere in the world. With more than 2 MILLION pages of documents to read, on nearly every government secret imaginable, The Black Vault is known worldwide for getting down to the truth… and nothing but.

Consortiumnews is the first investigative news magazine based on the Internet, and was founded in 1995 by the great journalist, Robert Parry, who helped expose the Iran-Contra scandal in the 1980s. Parry was inspired to start Consortiumnews because of the "groupthink" the mainstream media had fallen into, particularly when it came to the false warm-fuzzy memories of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
Conservative watchdog group
Independent research and media organization
Judicial Watch is an American conservative activist group and self-styled watchdog group that files Freedom of Information Act lawsuits to investigate alleged misconduct by government officials. 25 years of muckracking
Drilling beneath the headlines
Truthdig is a news website that provides a mix of long-form articles, blog items, curated links, interviews, arts criticism and commentary on current events delivered from a politically progressive, left-leaning point of view. (And it has Chris Hedges.)
Counterpunch has been telling the facts and naming the names for the past 25 years. We can quibble over "left" vs. "liberal," but this publication is decidedly from the "left." Whether you agree with their positions or not, the writing is usually cogent and the contributors make you think and question. Website plus a print magazine with exclusive content six times a year.
Often times it's my launch site
The Ring of Fire Network
Varying degrees of progressive voices
Ring of Fire is not what I'd call a robust, or on the edge, progressive outlet. It's more of a pick and choose situation, which is where we are with many sources these days. Mike Papantonio is great; so are Abby Martin and Lee Camp. On the other hand, I can live without fauxgressives like Thom Hartmann and David Pakman.
When you want to know what the slime on The Hill are up to, you need The Hill. I monitor it daily and it is often the jumping off point for me when I get myself in gear. It may not be inspirational writing, but it's factual and reliable.
Anti-establishment media aggregator
The Free Thought Project
Fighting tyrannical oppression
It is the mission of the Free Thought Project to foster the creation and expansion of liberty minded solutions to modern day tyrannical oppression. We feel that the internet has given way to a revolution of consciousness by providing for the massive and instantaneous exchange of information across the globe. Founded in 2013.
Anti-Media is a non-partisan, anti-establishment news publisher and crowd-curated media aggregator. Users can sign up, submit content, and decide where the content is located on the homepage by using Anti-Media’s voting system.
Information Clearing House (ICH)
News you won't find on CNN or Fox (or anywhere else)
An English-language financial blog...or IS it?
I really like ICH because it combines a wealth of OpEd pieces and hard news, and it tells you which is which. I have been getting their emails for years, literally. Every time it comes, it's in spam, no matter what I do to try to remedy that. It tells me I have to be "careful" with this email. Yeah. Because it contains that evil called "the truth," which often conflicts with Empire's official narrative.
Zero Hedge promotes itself as an English-language financial blog, but that's not all it is. People like to pooh-pooh ZH, but not me. It also aggregates news from a variety of sources, and often brings light to things I might otherwise miss. Their stuff is verifiable. Journalism snobs better get over their need for prestige. All the prestige sources are sell-outs now. They're useless to a population in dire need of the truth.
The New Fourth Estate
The Fourth Estate as we knew it is no more. Today, there is a new breed of "fourth estaters" who have taken it upon themselves to carry the mantle of truth. No longer limited to print media, these are bloggers, writers, videographers, and some pioneers in the early days of electronic media. At least one 'old hand' remains true to the truth. Seymour Hersh was the reporter who broke the story of the My Lai Massacre.
Other News and Blog Sites
Below is a list of publications with links. Some, of course, are more reliable than others, but all are worth having in your repertoire at this time. You will learn when to trust and when to look at both the news sources and the information they present with suspicion.
As I have said before, this is a living document in an ever-changing landscape. We'll add and subtract as the need arises. Should you have suggestions for additons, please write me at firstname.lastname@example.org
